Introduction

GiD is a preprocess and postprocess graphics program for finite-element analysis. Calsef is a structure-calculating module using the finite-element method.
The program GiD plus is a combination of the above two programs. This should be kept in mind for a better understanding of both the philosophy behind this manual and the use of the computational tools explained in it.
The integration of GiD and Calsef permits the user to apply the entire potential of GiD's graphics technology, facilitating the definition of problems and the correct interpretation of the results.
The Calsef calculating module enables the user to solve structural problems using the finite-element method.
Following are the steps using the finite-element method for carrying out a thorough analysis of a structure subjected to external actions:

This manual is intended for people already familiar with applying the finite-element method to problem solving. Therefore, by-passing any theoretical explanation of the method, the manual goes directly to instructions on how to enter data for setting up a problem in the calculating module.
For theoretical questions we suggest the following book: Oñate, E. Cálculo de estructuras por el método de los elementos finitos: análisis estático lineal. CIMNE.
It is also supposed that the user is familiar with the basics of GiD as a pre- and postprocessing tool. However, should questions in this area arise, we suggest consulting GiD user's manuals in order to fully benefit from the potential of GiD plus.
Calsef, the calculating module explained in this manual, is applicable to the following problems:
· Planar stress and planar deformation.
· Solids of revolution.
· 3D solids.
· Shells.
· Plates.

As these problems present different geometry, boundary conditions, loads, and geometrical definitions, Calsef is divided into distinct parts, one for each problem type. Entering data is done in two steps:
1) selecting the problem type, and
2) specifying the characteristics of the problem in question.

Problem type Name
3D solids Calsef_3DSolids_V1.0
Planar stress and deformation Calsef_PlaneState_V1.0
Solids of revolution Calsef_RevSolids_V1.0
Plates Calsef_Plate_V1.0
Shells Calsef_Shell_V1.0

This manual is organized in the following way:

The planar state module includes further explanations in order to cover problems of solids of revolution.
Each problem type is dealt with using an example. The user may extrapolate the information obtained and apply it to other problems of the same type.
