Description

REALTIME - Real Time Computational Mechanics Techniques for Multi-Fluid Problems, Reference ERC-2009-AdG_20090325, is a project funded by the European Commission under the VII Framework Programme. The project started on the 1st of December 2009 and is foreseen to last 5 years. The leading scientist is Prof. Sergio Idelsohn, ICREA Professor at CIMNE.

The project aims to developing, integrating and validating experimentally new formal approaches and computational methods rooted in the principles of Computational Mechanics that should prove key in building robust and accurate codes applicable to solving multi-fluid engineering problems in real or quasi-real time.

The main scientific goal is the development and experimental validation of a new generation of real time or quasi-real time methods based on innovative mathematical models and efficient computational procedures for multi-fluid flows. These include new CFD methods based on Lagrangian formulations, particle methods, special techniques allowing large time steps in time integration algorithms, fast continuous re-meshing, reduction methods and, last but not least, the use of state of the art GPUs and parallel processing technology.

The main practical outcome of this project will be a new, valuable code (or a series of codes) that allows industries, governments, and enterprises to solve in real or quasi-real time different problems that could lead to human risk such as industrial processes, fire spread, atmospheric situations, or patients monitoring in which the security or human life depends of a response in a very short time.

The success of the new RTCM technology developed in the project will be assessed by an extensive validation of its efficiency and accuracy in the solution of a series of benchmark problems in engineering for which experimental results will be available.
