Seminar - "Material Point Method for coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical problems", by Núria Pinyol

Wednesday, February 15th, 2017. Time: 12h

Place: O.C. Zienkiewicz Conference Room, C1 Building, UPC Campus Nord, Barcelona.

Material Point Method developments for modelling coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical problems applied to landslides will be presented. Previous works showed the effect of the heat-induced pore water pressure on the landslide acceleration for simple and predefined landslide geometries. In those cases, the dynamic equilibrium is solved for the entire slide and balance equations governing the generation and dissipation of heat and pore water pressure are solved at the scale of the shear band. Recently, the governing equations have been formulated and numerically solved within the framework of a MPM code for saturated deformable porous media. This general-purpose numerical tool allows the analysis of the run-out of landslides including the eventual thermal-induced acceleration.

Assistant Research Professor, Geomechanics Group (CIMNE).

Núria Pinyol is Lecturer in the Department of Geotechnical Engineering and a postdoc researcher in the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE). She obtained her PhD at UPC in 2010. Her thesis describes the thermo-hydro-mechanical analysis of rapid landslides. It was awarded by UPC as the best thesis in the field of Civil Engineering presented in the period 2009-2010. One of her research interests still focused in the field of landslides. She is currently working modelling landslides using a coupled MPM (Material Point Method) code under development.
