Numerical simulation of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) is gaining interest within the structural engineering community in order to address the challenges of estimating structural forces due to hydrodynamic loading. Improved understanding of hydrodynamic forces will aid in the assessment of existing bridges and design of new bridges within tsunami-prone regions where these structures serve as critical post-event recovery routes. To facilitate such numerical simulations, modules for FSI based on the particle finite element method (PFEM) have been implemented in OpenSees using the background mesh algorithm, building upon the open source software framework used by numerous researchers in earthquake engineering. Validations of the PFEM against wave flume experiments performed at Public Works Research Institute (PWRI) in Japan on bridge superstructures are presented for various bridge deck configurations, standing water levels, and wave heights.
