CIMNE Seminar - "Geotechnical and Environmental Coupled Models Involving Unsaturated Soils and Rocks", by Sebastià Olivella

The general formulation for unsaturated soil analysis including non-isothermal multiphase flow is first described. This includes mass, momentum and energy balance and corresponding constitutive equations for geomaterials. The mechanical models for unsaturated soils are defined in terms of stress, suction and temperature. The numerical approach, based on FE, for the development of CODE_BRIGHT has some particularities that will be highlighted. A series of Geotechnical and environmental problems that have been solved with CODE_BRIGHT are discussed. Problems involving swelling and collapse deformations are firstly presented. As a continuation, problems involving large permeability variations will be discussed in the context of various challenging problems such as gas migration and unsaturated soil failure.
Sebastià Olivella is Full Professor (Catedrático) at Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, School of Civil Engineering (Escola de Camins), UPC. He has been teaching geotechnical and geoenvironmental related subjects. He has been vice-dean and Dean of the Civil Engineering School, UPC. Research focuses on the numerical modelling of THM (thermo-hydro-mechanical) problems in geomaterials. He has participated in several research projects at the national and international level with modeling contributions on multiphase flow in porous media coupled to deformations. He has been awarded by ICE (UK) and ARMA (USA) institutions for best papers.
