Gainn4Ship Innovation measures the environmental impact of ro-pax HSC vessels
Within the framework of the project Gainn4Ship Innovation, were measured the environmental footprint and emissions of the ro-pax HSC Bencomo Express vessel operated by Fred. Olsen. This activity was coordinated by the shipping company jointly with CIMNE and took place in the Canary Islands, where the ship Bencomo Express vessel operates.
The information obtained in the sample taking carried out in November, 2015, will be used to determine proper environmental performance indicators for ro-pax HSC in order to define the optimal technical solutions. The goal is to reduce CO2 emissions on average by 20% and sulphur emissions on average by 80%.
Furthermore, it will provide useful insights into the performance of ro-pax HSC vessels, their associated operational costs and potential resale value. This will benefit ship owners who will be better equipped to make investment decisions and obtain finance.
A stringent sample taking system
The equipment and methodologies used comply with the requirements of the Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention – Directive 2012/33/EU issued by the International Maritime Organisation, which sets the most stringent limits for CO2 and sulphur emissions of vessels.
Monitoring, reporting and verification of emissions from the ro-pax HSC Bencomo was determined for various operational conditions (sailing on the route between Agaete (Gran Canaria) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Tenerife); sailing in port waters and standby uncoupled.
The environmental footprint and emissions of the ro-pax HSC Bencomo Express vessel measured prior to retrofitting will be compared with the footprint and emissions generated after LNG retrofitting.
About Gainn4Ship Innovation project
Gainn4Ship Innovation aims to retrofit a large high-speed craft (HSC) ro-pax vessel so that it will be fuelled by a mix of LNG and diesel. The technological solutions that will be applied to the HSC ro-pax vessel will prove that using LNG as marine fuel for the HSC fleet is possible. The pilot will be the first case in the world of a retrofitted HSC ro-pax vessel that maintains all the features needed in the liner service where the ship is deployed whilst increasing the quality of the service.>Further information
