Prof. Eugenio Oñate, Director of CIMNE, has been awarded the Ildefons Cerdà Medal 2019 by the Catalonian Branch of the Institute of Civil Engineers in Spain. The text motivating the award is presented below:
"The Ildefons Cerdà Medal 2019 is awarded to Professor Eugenio Oñate in recognition of his brilliant professional and academic career, and in particular, the important task of introducing, disseminating and developing numerical methods in the field of civil engineering, both through his teaching and through research and innovation.
Prof. Eugenio Oñate has contributed in a very significant way to the education of numerous generations of Civil Engineers and to the positioning of the Civil Engineering School of Barcelona as the first School in the field of Civil and Structural Engineering in Spain and one of the first ones in the world.
Prof. Eugenio Oñate was the director of the Civil Engineering School of Barcelona between 1983-89. In 1987, he founded the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE), with a visionary approach to research, innovation and the transfer of knowledge to the engineering sector".
The Ildefons Cerdà Medal 2019 was presented to Prof. Oñate in a ceremony held in the Palau de la Música Catalana on Friday 10th May.
