Reinforced concrete began to be used at the beginning of the 20th century and its generalization has made possible the development of industrialized societies. In these more than 100 years of use, it has been studied and provided solutions to the various types of premature damage that have been evidenced, the most common damage being corrosion of the steel reinforcement. The Seminar summarizes the types of damage that concrete can suffer in its interaction with the environment and highlights the many unknowns that remain to be resolved in its modeling, especially that based on numerical methods. The damage can affect the concrete itself because it cracks or its mechanical resistance is reduced, the reinforcement steel because it corrodes and its section or ductility decreases, or to the essential steel/concrete bond that bar corrosion cancels. The repair of damaged concrete requires very large investments, but also poses a risk of accidents and loss of human life, as in the case of the recently collapsed building in Miami, which makes this issue a global priority.
Carmen Andrade is Dr. in Industrial Chemistry. She has been Research Professor at the Institute of Construction Sciences of the CSIC of Spain devoting his research to concrete durability and reinforcement corrosion. At present is Research Visiting Professor at the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE). She is the author of numerous papers, has been editor of several books, and has supervised around 30 PhD theses. She has received several awards: R. N. Whitney Prize 2013 by NACE, Robert L’Hermite Medal from RILEM and “Paul McIntyre” from the Institute of Corrosion of UK. She is Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Trondheim (Noruega) and of Alicante (España). She has been President of several international organizations (UEAtc, RILEM, WFTAO and Liaison Committee, which brings together associations: CIB, FIB, IABSE, IASS, RILEM and ECCE) and from 2017-2021 of Alconpat: the Latimoamerican organization for Rehabilitation and assessment of structures.
